Today we (I) as just how modified your car is. Answer for your daily driver or whatever you drive the most (or don't I'm not a cop). For simplicity sake lets break down the states of modification into four tiers.

Stock - may include some non OEM replacement parts (tires/batteries/radios/window tint)

Lightly Modified - catback exhaust/muffler, different wheels, simple engine mods, different head/tail lights

Modified - raised/lowered suspension, body work, custom interiors, more aggressive engine mods

Heavily Modified - major engine work/swap, extensive suspension work, crazy body work

Asking this question brings up a number of other interesting questions I could ask such as:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Now if you couldn't tell answers 1 and 3 are for those of you who have one and only one car, while 2 and 4 are for those who have numerous toys. If you drive something like a two year old white Corrolla and you feel it's amazing in it's own unique way then by all means, vote accordingly. But if you do happen to have a pretty uninspired commuter don't go lying to yourself. I guess if you'd proudly consider yourself a [insert make and model here] enthusiast then that car would be fun to you.

Finally one more question while we're on the topic. For this question there's plenty of grey when it comes to the qualification of a "car." For a car to count it doesn't have to be running, but should be mostly complete (i.e. not a rusty shell sitting on a frame). I'm going to say no motorcycles, just because it's going to skew the numbers a way I don't want (I'd like to make a bunch of motorcycle questions for another day).

Stock. Haven't even had a chance to put on some nice Bosch wipers or anything - still waiting for the current ones to take a shit. Same goes for the OEM tires. Haven't put enough mileage on my car yet to make it worth replacing any of the stock parts.

Mine is pretty light right now, but I plan to make it into one badass machine over the coming years. Maybe when I get a real job out of college I will get one of these for it.

Crazy dream. . . maybe. Maybe.

2005 Maxima
- Looks like an ugly bubbly thing
- VERY responsive engine that is a tad too much fun to floor
- Front end is higher than rear end (if i keep it for a while ill probably get aftermarket shocks/springs to bring the front down a bit)

2005 Lincoln LS

- Awesome V8
- Acceleration assist (no idea the technical term for it) is extremely frustrating
- Each repair is ~$800+

I feel like a span all of the categories pretty well...

The daily: Lowered, exhaust, intake, lots of little mods

The beater: All stock or OEM replacement but cobbled together pretty cheaply

The racecar: hardly an inch that's stock in that thing

2003 IS300 5-speed, couple of JDM exterior mods and intake. Tons of fun, I love it.

2005 Scion xB. It's small, but holy shit can it carry stuff. We've fit a full-sized treadmill (unassembled), a love seat, and 4 tires/rims all with the rear hatch closed (obviously not at the same time). It's also carried 6 people and all our stuff (4 days worth) to/from Phoenix, and the same for Las Vegas. All while getting 30 mpg. It's auto, but it comes in handy sometimes.

The 2 DD's at my house are a Focus ST and a Mazda3 hatch, both of these are stock and will remain as such. However, the NB Miata I'm picking up this evening is another story. This is going to be my toy car, it's going to be getting a set of Flyin Miata adjustable coilovers and swaybars, and a decent street legal track build will follow (eventually with turbo), so this car will be getting fairly heavily modified.

Right now all we have is the miniature van (toyota Sienna) and my daily, a '96 Camry. The Camry has Scion wheels, cat back exhaust, and open air intake. It sounds mean, and goes well. It is an automatic, but I have learned how to drive the auto like an manual of sorts. Sometimes I shift the gears myself, and it adds to the "fun" of it.

But when I get a 2nd car for myself (toy car), the Camry will be saved from my beatings. That will be reserved for the weekend car. :-)

Can't answer the middle one.

"Yes, it's my only car and it has to be fun and practical"

It's not practical.

As for stock, I'd be tempted to modify it for power/handling, but even slight modifications would push my insurance through the roof. I'm on a classic car policy that's about a third of the price of the next cheapest option, and they won't cover any modifications.

I had to think on question 1 because I have not done all the mods to my car. My daily is a 98 camaro ss. Mods are chambered exhaust(think gmmg exhaust), ls6 intake, air/egr delete, skip shift delete, lowered 1.5" , strut brace, a few visual mods. I have a set of long tube headers and a chatted y pipe and subframe connectors sitting on the floor at home. I have also been slowly buying parts for a cam swap, I will do the headers and cam at the same time.

Why not some sway bars? They can change the handling a lot for the good from what I have heard. You can always take them off at the end and I think for the time you will have them it will be worth it. Even if your car is totaled/damaged.

My daily driver Alfa 156 is lightly modified I suppose. It's got a stainless exhaust wchich deletes the central silencer, it's got some of the baffling on the intake deleted (by the PO) and front and rear anti-roll bars from a GTA Sportwagon.

Once the shocks blow I'll be getting some aftermarket ones, hopefully with only a minimal drop. The stock ones are a bit wallowy (although the ride's good). Fingers crossed it'll be a bit sharper without too much of a ride penalty. It is a DD after all.

I think you misread/misunderstood something. I could modify the car, but my insurance would be much, much more expensive.

E30s are particularly bad for modifications making the insurance go through the roof because of the kinds of people who drove modified old BMWs before they started to be classics, but in my case it's even worse because I would have to go with a much more expensive insurer as well as paying extra for having a modified car.

And not telling the insurers isn't a good plan. I think it's the same in the US, in that you have a duty to notify them of anything that would affect your insurance cost. If you don't tell them and anyone finds out, your insurance won't be valid and (here) you'll get charged with driving without insurance and lose your license - as well as owing lots of money if you hit someone.

Yeah, I've chatted with people on here about that, and generally we came to the conclusion that a) people don't notify their insurers as much as they should (which is the same here) and b) your insurance costs are generally lower in most areas, so what's 'significant' varies a bit.

It can get a bit silly here. If I put the OEM spec alloys on my car that it would have come with if the original buyer had forked out a bit extra, I'm technically supposed to notify them. If I do, they don't have time for the nuances, and just put me in a box with all the boy racers who put silly wheels on their 1.1 litre Citroen Saxos before crashing into a hedge.

I don't own a car yet, but the Chevelle SS I'm stalking is going to get a five-speed along with the rolling restoration- four-on-the-floor is just not enough, in my opinion, for modern-day driving. Also, probably, a (low-pressure) turbo (gas mileage) and a custom paintjob (I am a graphic designer...)

See, the issue is you think of 6 cars, you think of nice cars. My friend, who at last count has 7 cars has, in order of more Jalopness:

Fiero with 3800 swap - Has a northstar waiting in the wings to put in

2 300SD's - Both rusty shit buckets, but one runs

at least 3 3800 powered Buicks

a Dakota that just consumed a head gasket.

Recently he sold:

Stealth R/T - Required $4500 of work

Now, none of these are nice cars. Each one barely runs.
He has them because he loves cars, and he is poor.

And he is a true Jalop.

Even though the 996s will never appreciate, people said the same thing about the 914s. As such, I try to only make modifications that I can undo - specifically I upgraded the shifter to the shifter from the 997 (but kept the 996 shifter assembly), tinted the windows, and have a set of Boxster S rims for winter. I'd love to get a second engine cover and install a GT2 style wing, but I still cannot justify the cost. :(
